Azure blue sea, endless beaches, sunny weather, ancient architecture, great food, hospitable and friendly locals… all this and even more comes to mind when we say Greece. Innovative medical services, experienced fertility specialists, high-quality clinics and laboratories… this, in turn, goes through the head of many when we say IVF in Greece. And all this together can lead to the beginning of a new life. Honestly, how many times have you heard that being well relaxed helps to conceive? So if you like the idea of a holiday combined with your fertility treatment or another type of IVF therapy, Greece is a great choice!
You can choose from at least 50 clinics in the country, most of which are located in Athens and Thessaloniki. Low-cost airlines flying to these destinations make traveling a lot easier and cheaper. However, foreign patients must keep in mind that during the summer months the price of air tickets and accommodation increases due to the tourist season.
In Greece, the maximum age for a woman who wants to undergo IVF treatment is 50. For men, as usual, there is no age limit. Heterosexual couples, both married and unmarried, are accepted. IVF treatment is also available to single women. As for lesbian couples, it's a bit more complicated. They can undergo IVF therapy too, but only on the basis of a notarized statement that the future mother is undergoing treatment as a single woman. The catch is that in this case the female partner cannot be legally connected with the child.
And now let's move on to the price list. IVF treatment with own eggs oscillates between 3000 and 4000 EURwhile the cost of IVF with donor eggs ranges from 5000 to 6500 EUR. The donated embryos turn out to be more affordable than donated eggs. Patients who are interested in the "whole package" should therefore prepare around 3000 EUR. Thanks to state-guaranteed anonymity, there is a lot of willing gamete donors of multiple ethnic backgrounds in Greece, so there is practically no waiting list. If you have no further questions, I have one left: When does your medical holiday starts?
What is good about Greece is that the IVF laws are patient-friendly and fairly liberal and the cost of the treatment is reasonable. Combined with more than 35 years of experience, these facts leave only minimal room for hesitation. Regarding other artificial reproductive techniques, gamete donation is strictly anonymousand social freezing is permitted. Sperm, eggs and embryos can be left frozen for up to 10 years. The maximumnumber of embryos to transfer is 2-3 (depending on the age and number of previously failed transfers). Preimplantation genetic testing (such as PGS and PGD), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and assisted hatching (AH) are commonly used. Sex selection is allowed for medical reasons only. Surrogacy is also an option. However, this arrangement is not available to gay couples.
